Vote for favourite Lottery-funded scheme in Haringey
9:20am Saturday 11th February 2012
People are being asked to vote for the best Lottery-funded scheme in Haringey.
The National Lottery Awards 2012 aims to recognise the unsung heroes, selfless volunteers and dedicated workers improving lives with Lottery funding.
Last year more than £6.6 million of National Lottery Good Causes funding was awarded to projects in Haringey.
Among the recipients was Free the Child, a project which runs workshops, seminars and activities for young people involved in crime and gang culture. It received £9,000 in December 2011.
Haringey Sports Development, a charity project that runs activity sessions for school children, also received a £10,000 grant in January.
National Lottery presenter Jenni Falconer says any organization, big or small, that has received Lottery funding can enter the Awards.
Jenni said: "National Lottery players raise a staggering £30m every week for Good Causes. A variety of Lottery-funded projects have touched the lives of many in Haringey."
She said Lottery funding is supporting older people, helping vulnerable children and transforming parks and local sporting facilities.
"There are thousands of Lottery-funded projects across the UK deserving of recognition," she added. The entrants that make it to the finals will receive national recognition at a ceremony, broadcast on BBC One, later this year.
They will also have a chance to win a £2,000 cash prize to spend on their project.
The National Lottery Awards have seven categories each reflecting an area of Lottery funding: Arts, Education, Environment, Health, Heritage, Sport and Voluntary/Charity.
