Haringey Borough convincingly overcome Holmer Green
12:48pm Monday 20th February 2012
Haringey Borough resumed activity after their enforced two-week break in determined fashion, opening up a two-goal lead inside seven minutes against relegation-threatened Holmer Green before running out 6-1 victors in their South Midlands Premier League encounter.
The deadlock was broken after just four minutes when visiting keeper Dan Little made a fine close-range block but his defenders could not prevent Darrell Cox hooking the loose ball into the roof of the net.
Three minutes later a corner from the left was not cleared and the ball fell for Charles Douse to stab it into the centre of the goal from just a few feet out.
The game was as good as over after 22 minutes when Cox finished a sweeping move with a fierce blast from a tight angle and any lingering doubts were extinguished seven minutes later when Christopher Benjamin drove in the fourth.
The final goal of a one-sided first half, which had seen no serious threats mounted on the Borough goal, came from Cox in the 39th minute when he completed his hat-trick from the spot after a desperate tackle on Dean Fenton had led to the penalty award.
Inevitably, the second half was an anti-climax and although Holmer created some chances, their finishing let them down.
Borough wasted some opportunities to improve their goal difference but found the net only once through Benjamin, who worked space for himself to drive home a low shot from a central position.
It was deep into injury time before Holmer Green scored their consolation goal when Danny Boateng glanced a header home from a left-wing corner.
